We are (extremely) pleased to announce the first release candidate of Invision Power Board 3.0.0 is now available. This is the first release candidate release so please take a moment and read this entire announcement before downloading. Everyone here at IPS is very excited to reach this milestone of development and we look forward to working with everyone to sort out any remaining issues that crop up during the RC stage so we can quickly move to the final release. The release candidates for IP.Blog, IP.Gallery, and IP.Downloads will be available in about a week. What is a Release Candidate? A release candidate is a version of the software between the beta phase and a final release. With the first release candidate of IP.Board 3.0.0 you can safely assume that we consider the software stable enough to use on your live community. There will be bugs and issues but it is our belief that any issues that come up should not impact your overall ability to manage your community. Keep this in mind as you make your decision to upgrade to IP.Board 3.0.0 RC1 and only upgrade if you are comfortable working around any possible issues that are present. We will of course fix any issues that come up in IP.Board 3.0.0's final release. Technical Support and Service IP.Board 3.0.0 RC 1 can be considered safe to use on a live site but it is not quite the final version of the software just yet. We want to give those comfortable upgrading to an RC release the chance to do so and report issues before we encourage everyone to upgrade. Technical support and service is not offered during the RC stage but of course will be available when the final version is announced. Download IP.Board 3.0.0 RC 1 To download, log in to your client area. You will see the RC download information by clicking into your downloads. As stated above, technical support is not available so please only download if you are comfortable testing software. The first release candidate of IP.Board 3.0.0 is coming very soon. Everyone here at IPS wants to thank all of our customers who took their time to test the various beta releases of IP.Board to date. We also want to thank those who participated in the IPB3 preview forum and gave their pre-beta feedback. IPS believes that the public beta process was an important part of this process. Although the process took longer than we originally anticipated, it is our firm belief that taking feedback and testing results from our customer base has created a great product we can all be proud of. Not only did we fix various bugs and issues but we also took the time to make certain changes to IPB3 when people pointed out areas we thought were great but turned out not so great. Granted it took time to make those changes but the end results are very good for all. That is the beauty of collaborating with our customers and are happy with the outcome. Frequently Asked Questions We are receiving various questions about the upcoming releases. Here are a few below. Some are repeats but good to review. What is a Release Candidate? A release candidate is a version of the software between the beta phase and a final release. Once we post the first release candidate of IP.Board 3.0.0 you can safely assume that we consider the software stable enough to use on your live community. Everyone here at IPS is very excited to reach this milestone of development. Note that technical support and service is not available until we reach the final, supported version. Keep in mind that, although this is a release candidate, there will probably still be some bugs and issues so make your decision to use the software carefully. Is there a cost to upgrade? So long as you have a current and active support/upgrade license there is no cost to upgrade to IPB3. Also, if you are on IPS Hosting, there is no cost to upgrade. If your Standard license is expired you can renew it for $25. If you need help just contact customer service. Can you upgrade my board for me? We will be happy to upgrade your board when IP.Board 3.0.0's final version is released. However, we do not provide support services for the release candidate stage. Keep in mind that all active IP.Board licenses come with free upgrade services so you can upgrade your install yourself or our staff would be happy to do it for you at no cost to you. What about IP.Blog/Gallery/Downloads? The release candidates for the applications will be available just a few days after IP.Board's release candidate. We are staggering the releases so bug reports can be confirmed that they are only regarding IP.Board itself. On the final release day, all applications will be released right along with IP.Board. Please note that the updates to the applications did not contain any major changes at this time but instead were updated to work with IP.Board 3.0.0's code. One of the very first updates made after IP.Board 3.0.0's final release will be major upgrades to the applications. Will IP.Board 3.0.0 be encoded? The beta releases were encoded so we could control the releases and how long they were in use. Starting with RC1, IP.Board 3.0.0 will not be encoded. IP.Board 3.0.0 RC 1 will be out very soon. If you click the thumbnail it’ll take you to the original image. Apoc thought this would be a happy medium so users cannot post images that break the forum size and so users can post images that can be seen in full at a reasonable size but clicked on for larger. When it comes to signature sizes you should abide by the following Keep signature images to 680 wide x 128 high. See my sig for an example. A tiny bit higher and wider is fine, just use common sense and do not go over board. The YouTube embed are also re-enabled so users can easily embed YT videos in threads. PLEASE NOTE Forum rules and the ToS still apply, users posting inapropriate images with violent/sexual themes will be reported to customer services, as will innapropriate youtube videos. please keep it clean guys and enjoy the new features, i'm sure avatars are on the way in the near future too. We are happy to announce our first skin design contest! With the upcoming release of Invision Power Board 3.0 we want to give all of the great skin designers in our community a chance to leave a permanent mark on IP.Board. This is your chance to design a skin that will be available to all users of IP.Board right along with the download of the software in the client area. Our goal with this skin is to create another default skin option for clients to use as the base of their skin design projects. One key point to keep in mind is that we specifically do not want a simple redesign of the current default IP.Board 3.0.0 skin. While you can feel free to use our default skin as a starting point, we want this new skin to be its own work. Feel free to change HTML, CSS, images, JavaScript usage, etc. as you see fit within the goals of the project. Skin Design Goals [*]The new skin should be streamlined, light weight, and efficient as possible. The best way to go about this is to start with as little JavaScript and CSS as you can and add only as appropriate. [*]Keep web standards in mind and cross-browser/cross-platform compatibility. [*]While designing your skin keep novice skinners in mind. It should be very easy to change your default header, colors, etc. even for a novice with little to no knowledge of CSS and HTML's more advanced properties. [*]Must include all functionality of IPB3 but feel free to present those functions in any way you see fit. In summary, we are after a very professional skin with a nice, clean look and feel. Less is more approach in both the complexity of the design and the complexity of the HTML/CSS/JS is the key to keep in mind. Find a friend with minimal design experience and ask them if they are able to edit the look and feel. If they can you're on the right track! Choosing Winners We have created a special Gallery category on our company forums for submissions. Just create an album in that category with screen shots of your skin design. The more the better to give everyone a good look at your work. The IPS customer community will then be able to vote on the skins they like best. Submissions to the gallery can start at any time (and be updated as you go) but must be uploaded by June 15, 2009. Customers will not be able to vote until after the June 15 deadline to keep the process fair for all. The IPS customer community will be allowed to vote for one week and the top 10 skins will be reviewed by IPS staff and management. You will be asked to allow us to review an export of the skin to see your code quality so keep in mind don't just go for looks: the underlying quality of code is important too! We may also wish to ask you questions on your vision, approach, and ideas for improvement. The final choice will be made based on how well the designer has met the design goals specified here. Prizes Prizes will be awarded as cash with third place receiving $150.00 and second place $250.00. First place will receive $2,000.00 and their skin will be featured along with IP.Board as an alternate skin choice! We hope all the talented skin designers in the community will participate. We released IP.Board 3.0.0 Beta 5 last week and the release has gone very well so we are preparing to enter the Release Candidate phase of development. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded the various beta releases and posted bug reports. Please continue to do so! The more we can fix before final release the better for all. There will probably be bugs but hopefully nothing that will cause any major issues. So, although it's not a beta anymore, still consider this information before you upgrade your live community.
